Summary
The National Vehicle and Driver Licensing Agency (RDW) is responsible for the registration of motor vehicles in the Netherlands. The RDW aims to provide you with a simple and secure environment to exchange your files with the RDW. This is done with this application called File Exchange Platform (BUS).

The Challenge
RDW knew that BUS could function better by giving it a bit more love. It was up to me to lead the project by identifying key issues to fix for a more user-friendly product.
Working with two RDW Engineers, I helped develop a design system and addressed interaction pain points within the application.
Audit results
After reviewing, improvements to BUS were found.
“The RDW platform's outdated design causes poor user experience, with unclear navigation and ineffective communication leading to confusion. The 'Explorer' tab needs to support various user permissions, and the RDW BUS feature requires a simpler “Download link generator” process. The goal is to redesign the platform for better usability and navigation.”
Restructure the lay-out
The audit revealed that the layout could be improved by treating the platform as a web application rather than a website. After exploring different options, I found that a horizontal navigation structure would be the most effective. This approach allows us to highlight active states and call-to-action buttons from left to right, guiding users more intuitively through the application.

Design system
Building RDW's own design system ensured the brand's unique identity is embedded in every part of the user interface. This tailored approach offers flexibility and scalability, allowing the system to evolve with the product. It also encourages innovation, enabling the integration of cutting-edge features that distinguish the product. In the end, a custom design system is a valuable investment for a distinctive and adaptable digital presence.

Explorer-tab
Users need quick and easy access to their folders and files, with clear visibility of their options. By adding a folder section to the content area, we improved organization and tested the relevance of the Tree-listing section. Additionally, the new bulk option in the Files section activates a menu only upon selection, simplifying the user experience.
Download link generator
I designed a user-friendly process for generating download links by breaking down each step with clear, intuitive screens. Understanding the need for easy file uploads and sharing, I developed a logical, step-by-step plan with motion design, ready for testing to ensure a seamless user experience.
